Fire Keepers Song

(This song was given to a fire keeper at Sabaskong by an Elder in the US. The fire keeper taught and passed on this song to the western door keepers in Manitoba – who honour their fire keepers.)

Oshka bens, dee nee go (I am called a young firekeeper)
Oshka bens, dee na o nee go (I give this service)
Mee gee zee, nee wee tchee wa (I go with the eagle)
Ma ni tou, nda no kee ta wa (I work for the Great Spirit)
(Repeat 1st verse)

Oshka bens, dee nee go (I am called a young firekeeper)
Oshka bens, din a o nee go (I provide this service)
Ish ko tay, neewaa ban dan (I see the fire)
Ish ko tay, nee nga na wayn dan (I keep the fire going)
(Repeat 2nd verse)
